about
Enyimba is a chant sung by the Igbo tribe of Nigeria when it’s time for war. Yankari put a twist on this and tell a tale of an immigrant leaving his homeland for a better life in a “white man’s” country. What ensues is a journey of realisation: the grass is not always greener on the other side, and he faces obstacles in the form of his new hosts and the struggle to make a life.
The band felt a chorus of voices was necessary for Enyimba and reached out to an inner city youth project in Dublin, spending a day recording there. These young voices provide an emotional anchor to the piece and in doing so create a one time only event: Dublin youths singing an Igbo chant, thousands of years old, in 2017.
